What is Reflexology?
Reflexology is a non-intrusive complementary therapy based on the theory that different points on your feet, lower leg, hands, face or ears correspond with different areas of your body. This then promotes a feeling of relaxation, stimulates your circulation, improves your mood, helps to relieve tension, soothes your tired feet and improves your sense of wellbeing. For example:
- the tips of the toes reflect the head
- the heart and chest are around the ball of the foot
- the liver, pancreas and kidney are in the arch of the foot
- low back and intestines are towards the heel
How does Reflexology work?
Your Reflexologist at #NIHPDurham massages certain areas on your feet and hands which are linked to other areas and organs of the body.
Reflexology practitioners believe that applying pressure to these ‘reflex’ areas can promote health in the corresponding organs through energetic pathways. A scientific explanation is that the pressure sends signals that balance the nervous system or release chemicals, such as endorphins that reduce your pain and stress.

How will Reflexology help me?
The theory is that reflexology helps your body to restore its balance naturally. After a treatment you may feel relaxed and experience reduced tension. As a result, you might also notice yourself sleeping better and find your mood and sense of wellbeing improving. You may also find that other aspects improve too.
There are some positive reflexology research projects being carried out and so currently there is not enough body of evidence for anyone to make clinical claims of effectiveness. Reflexologists do not claim to diagnose or cure.
Menopause and Reflexology
At menopause, Reflexology works by regulating the hormones and glandular functions of the body. It can help to alleviate and balance both the physical and emotional systems. By working with the hypothalamus and pituitary, Reflexology can help to restore balance to the endocrine system. This in turn can alleviate menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes as well as anxiety.
By calming the central nervous system, sleep disturbances can also be alleviated and anxiety and stress levels reduced. By regulating calcium and phosphorous levels in the thyroid gland, bone loss can prevented. Reflexology also helps the ovaries to regulate their oestrogen secretions and the uterus to maintain its natural health and flexibility.
Research carried out at the UK School of Complementary Health in Exeter indicates a decrease in anxiety, depression, insomnia, hot flushes and night sweats among menopausal women who received regular Reflexology over a 4-month period.
What happens in a typical session?
A typical Reflexology session will begin with a brief consultation to review your symptoms, medical history and lifestyle.
Your Reflexologist will then begin to assess your feet and stimulate various points around your feet to identify areas of tenderness or tension. Your Reflexologist will then use brisk movements to warm your feet and apply light pressure from your toes and down to your heels, according to your comfort.
Some areas may be tender or sore, so your reflexologist may spend extra time on these points. Most people feel calm and relaxed after a treatment and you may even feel sleepy.
The effects of Reflexology are cumulative and, depending on specific needs and symptoms, a course of treatments is usually recommended. Many people find it beneficial to have 4-6 weekly or fortnightly sessions initially, followed by a more general ‘maintenance’ session every 4-6 weeks.
