What is Chiropody & Podiatry?

Podiatry is the modern term for chiropody. Your podiatrist at the Northern Integrative Health Practice (NIHP) in Durham offers advice about the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of disorders of the lower limbs, particularly the feet.

All podiatrists must train for several years to become qualified practitioners. This allows us to treat common problems such as calluses or corns, provide general nail care but also to undertake nail surgery and biomechanical assessments.

We are HPC registered (Health Professions Council) which is the modern terminology for State Registration. We are also members of the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists.

You & Your Family

All ages of people can benefit from specialist foot care at some stage in their life, therefore it is good practice to have your feet checked periodically to avoid developing future foot health problems.

It is also vital as we get older to have regular foot care to ensure we keep mobile and our feet are comfortable and free from infection. Research has proven that falls can be greatly reduced in the older age group if feet are properly cared for.

We all visit a dentist on a regular basis but our feet, one of the most used parts of our body, are often neglected, sometimes with devastating results.

Problems with your feet are often inherited so if members of your family are known to suffer with foot health problems, it is important that you get your own feet checked to identify potential problems early on.

What does a typical session involve?

During an initial visit with your Chiropodist you will be required to provide information regarding your medical history and if applicable any medication. Your Chiropodist will thoroughly examine your feet, looking at their overall condition making note of circulation, nerve supply, strength, flexibility and alignment.

Advice will be given regarding any problems you may have with your feet and the necessary treatment will be performed. This may involve the reduction of corns and calluses, managing nail disorders and infections, removing verrucae or assisting you with more complex foot problems.

Your Chiropodist will also be interested in your choice of footwear and may in some instances advise you to have a Biomechanical Assessment to see if Orthotics (specialized insoles) are required.

An initial visit will take approx. 30 minutes and subsequent appointments will vary depending upon the treatment required.

What can be treated?

Chiropody in DurhamFungal Nails
We can identify fungal infections in the nail and provide a treatment plan to deal with even the most stubborn infections.

Athletes Foot
We can diagnose this condition and provide a treatment plan to eliminate it and prevent recurrences.

Verrucae / Warts
We offer a variety of treatment options including a weekly treatment of caustics.

Cracked Heels
Painlessly treated, we can reduce any excess hard skin and cracks, eliminating painful symptoms and vastly improving the skin’s appearance.

Nail Surgery
In cases of recurring or serious ingrowing toenails, the whole or a part of nail is permanently removed under local anaesthetic. This is normally a last resort and in most cases we can usually remove the ingrown toenail without resorting to surgery.

Routine Treatment
Most general conditions will be covered in a routine treatment, including nails, hard skin, corns and calluses. This can instantly transform your feet and provide much improved comfort and cosmetic enhancement.

Biomechanics
Podiatric Biomechanics is the study of foot and leg function. Mechanical malfunction can result in numerous problems like foot, heel, knee or hip pain, or conditions such as plantar fasciitis.

An assessment may be required to study foot function both standing and in motion. Also, joint range-of-motion and muscle strength is assessed. Footwear advice, an orthotic (insole) or an exercise programme may be required to improve function and performance.
