What is the Bowen Technique?
The Bowen Technique is a soft tissue remedial therapy developed in the 1950s by Tom Bowen from Geelong, Australia. The practitioner uses thumbs and fingers on precise points of the body to perform Bowen's unique sets of rolling-type moves over muscle, ligament, tendon and fascia, prompting the body to reset and re-align. The treatment is subtle and relaxing without forceful manipulation. Most of the work can be performed through light clothing. A distinctive feature of Bowen is that the therapist leaves the room between sets of moves, allowing the client’s body time to respond to the treatment.
Why learn the Bowen Technique?
If you are currently a practising therapist, the Bowen Technique is an essential tool. Bowen works very quickly and effectively with chronic and acute conditions, and is one of the most effective therapy tools available today.
As well as being gentle on the client, the Bowen Technique is also very gentle on the practitioner as the light touch required makes minimal demands on the therapist.
The training format has been specifically designed to enable people from all backgrounds to be confident and relaxed whilst learning the Bowen Technique. Our courses are also fully accessible to those wishing to study the Bowen Technique to help family and friends. Due to the structure and format of the ECBS course of training, there are no pre-requisites for commencing the Bowen Technique course.
Benefits of the Bowen Technique
A very wide range of complaints can be addressed with the Bowen Technique and it is suitable for all ages from newborn babies to the elderly. Response is generally quick and this makes it a time and cost effective treatment option for clients. Your Tutor: Paula Esson
Paula Esson studied Sport Science at Northumbria University specialising in exercise physiology and sports performance and has coached at a National level for England Basketball. As head of sport science for Gateshead College the effects of sports injuries on players and students formed a main focus of attention in terms of treatment and prevention. It was personal injury to a shoulder that brought Paula to the Bowen Technique. Intrigued by the marked changes in pain, function and well-being, developed enough conviction to train as a practitioner.
Qualifying in April 1999, the demand for the technique from sports performers and the general public soon saw a change in career. Paula is now co-owner and Clinical Director of the NIHP in Sacriston, Durham. A keen link to sports performance still exists with a personal desire to take the Bowen Technique into the Professional Sports arena as the primary care for injury prevention and treatment. As an experienced coach, teacher and therapist, Paula believes that bringing balance to the individual, physically, emotionally and spiritually contributes to health and ultimately well-being and feels The Bowen Technique provides the trigger to achieve this in a natural and non-intrusive format. When Paula is not working she enjoys bringing up her young son, basketball, volleyball and squash are keen active hobbies with music, films and books to relax by.
